How to Stop Nausea From Acid Reflux
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid or bile flows back into the esophagus. This backflow, or “reflux,” is caused by the esophagus not closing completely, or relaxing inappropriately. While nausea from acid reflux can be uncomfortable and disruptive, tips from Dr. Hossein Bagshahi and Dr. Laura Lyn Gallagher to better manage and alleviate these symptoms include:
- Limit alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol tends to relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and causes the stomach to produce more acid. Combined, these factors can exacerbate heartburn and other acid reflux symptoms.
- Avoid trigger foods: Foods that increase the risk of acid reflux include spicy meals, citrus, horseradish, and alcohol. Knowing the types of foods that catalyze your acid reflux can help you prevent symptoms and better manage your discomfort.
- Eat smaller meals: Eating smaller meals throughout the day rather than consuming large, infrequent meals can reduce pressure on your stomach and help circumvent acid reflux symptoms.
- Chew slowly: Chewing slowly not only helps prevent overeating, but it can also increase saliva production, which helps neutralize stomach acid and reduce reflux.
- Stay upright after eating: Avoid lying down or reclining for at least two to three hours after eating to prevent stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus.
Along with taking over-the-counter medications, the tips listed above can be very helpful in managing nausea from acid reflux. Unfortunately, these measures may not be enough to provide relief for North Dallas patients affected by GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder). For this reason, our fellowship-trained Fort Worth bariatric surgeon and team of weight loss specialists offer effective treatment to reduce acid reflux and other GERD symptoms, such as chest pain, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing. Our minimally invasive techniques combined with dietary guidance from our medical weight loss team can significantly reduce — or even completely eliminate — uncomfortable or painful symptoms from acid reflux.
